Former California Sen. Barbara Boxer raised eyebrows this week after first registering as a foreign agent with the Chinese surveillance company Hikvision, then later “deregistering” Tuesday.

Hikvision was barred by the Commerce Department in 2019 over its involvement within the Chinese authorities’s suppression of the Uyghurs — an ethnic minority inhabitants within the Xinjiang province positioned in northwest China.

Hikvison is reportedly the world’s main surveillance tools provider and signed a $272 million contract with Xinjiang police between 2016-2017, in line with the Center for Strategic and International Studies.
